Niels Nielsen

Niels Nielsen was born in the parish of Rostrup the 8th of November 1826 and christened the 7th January 1827, as a son of Freeholder, farmer Niels Nielsen Hvostrup and wife Birgitte Hansdatter.
He was carried of girl Birthe Sveigaards at Larndrup, the parish of Lyngbye, ?? Anders Nielsen same place, freeholders Hans Pallesen and Christen Smed both in Rold and the mother of the child.

I have not succeeded in finding the confirmation of Niels in Rostrup Kirke 1840/41. A new parish register is beginning late 1840, and either there have not been any confirmed children from Rostrup in the autumn 1840 and the spring 1841, or he have been serving somebody and has had his confirmation in the parish there.

Niels Nielsen was called in to duty under the war 1848 - 1850. where he among other things participated in the battle at Isted as ranger at the 2. "forstærkningskorps".
In the years 1851 - 1857 he is moving around and for a period he is a farmlabourer at a grocer in Hobro with a single trip to Skivum.

Batchelor Niels Nielsen was married the 7th of November 1857 in Skivum Church with Nicoline Petrea Krebs.
Witnesses were: churchsinger and teacher Krebs in Skivum and innkeeper Ludvig Krebs in Skivum (respectively the father and the brother to the bride).

It is said, that he was ready to volunteer in the war in 1864 and he had got hold in the call-up papers, but Nicoline took them from his pocket and tore them to pieces. You will understand her motive - at that time they had three small children.

1857 - 1872 he is a tenant of Tiendegaards Vandmølle (watermill) and from 1872 until he retired he first was a railwaykeeper in Sulsted in railwaykeeperhouse no. 5 (census 1880) and from 1881 at Hvorupgaard. He was in addition to that manager of the halt. The last mentioned level-crossinghouse no more exist, but it was situated in Hvorup, where Høvejen is crossing the railway down at the left side, if you are coming from the barracks.

The railway Nørresundby - Frederikshavn was opened 16th of August 1871 with 3 daily departures in each direction.
There were following stations (1950): Nørresundby, Hvorupgård (halt), Sulsted, Tylstrup, Brønderslev, Emb (halt), Vrå, Gunderup, Hæstrup (halt), Hjørring, Sønderskov (halt), Sindal, Tolne, Kvissel, Elling, Frederikshavn.

Some of their sons, Johan Frantz, Niels and Hans Christian, emigrated to USA, and at the census 1890, the oldest is seen to be home at a visit, because he is mentioned at addition list A - persons whose stay in the parish only are temporarily:
Johan Franz Nielsen, 28 år, unmarried, born in Gudum, American, working with cultivation, Amerika.

The censuses are not always exact neither considering peoples age nor their name. At that census Nicoline Petrea´s name is spelled : Nikko Line Petræa Kræps.

Picture from about 1894.

Niels was living his last 22 years as a widower, and 1901 he moved to "Engholt" in Vestbjerg at the daughter Ester Salome Louise Nielsen and her husband Jens Daniel Frederik Møller.
One of the grandchildren is telling, that he had a lottery ticket - no. 6449 - and he went to Aalborg once a month to get it renewed, and every time he had a bag with sweets to the grandchildren.

Niels Nielsen died the 5th of March 1914, 87 years old, and he was berried from Hvorup Church on the churchyard, where the gravestone of him and his wife still is standing.

Nicoline Petrea Krebs

Nicoline Petera Krebs was born in Bradsted Skole, Veggerby Sogn (parish) 1834, and christened the 16th of November 1834 in Veggerby Kirke.
Witnesses: The mother of the child, Christian ….., Christian Brams (husbond of the fathers sister), Niels Trystrup and Nicolai Peter Krebs (bigger brother).

She had her confirmation in Skivum Kirke 1849 - "very good" in knowledge and she had a good moral and at that time she still was home at her parents.

At the census 1850 and 1855 she still is at her parents. In 1855 she is the only child at home, and besides the parents it shows, there is an older farm labourer.

In February, the year after the wedding, she delivers a deadborn baby, she still stays home at the parents, when Niels Nielsen is a milltenant in Gudumlund.

As the wife of pointsman Niels Nielsen she died the 22nd of February 1892, 57 years old and she was berried from Hvorup Kirke.
